Imagine Learning provides systematic, targeted instruction that teaches crucial literacy skills and strategies. For example, students learn how to attack multisyllabic words in order to transition from beginning readers to fluent readers. This type of skill acquisition helps students build confidence as their abilities grow. As students progress through the curriculum, the program continually provides instructional feedback that directs them to use the skills they have already learned. Along the way, scaffolds are offered for students who need a sheltered environment.

The program offers a balance between literature and informational text. Students learn standards-aligned skills and strategies as they work with both literature and informational text. Imagine Learning is proud to partner with the Associated Press to provide students with authentic, rigorous text. Focused learning opportunities include direct instruction combined with instructional feedback and reteaching opportunities. Foundational skills become the bedrock for more advanced learning. With explicit instruction and multiple practices in both types of text, students are prepared for upper elementary content.

Academic vocabulary

Academic vocabulary is the language of the classroom, and mastery of this vocabulary set is crucial for children to be successful in any content area. Academic language can be difficult for all students, but creates an especially big barrier for English language learners. With this in mind, Imagine Learning was built with a targeted academic language focus, so students learn the meanings of the words they will encounter in their regular school environment. Students learn high frequency procedural and domain specific words through videos, pictures, glossaries, and direct translations. Words and concepts are repeated in multiple contexts which allow students to make connections and achieve a deeper level of understanding.

Imagine Learning creates a dynamic, personalized learning path to provide just what each student needs. When students first begin the program, they are guided through a placement test to assess their current developmental level. This initial assessment allows Imagine Learning to prescribe activities that target personal gaps. As students work through the content, formative assessments evaluate how students are performing and where they need more instruction. Predictive checkpoints, instructional feedback, and opportunities for reteaching ensure that students are kept on the edge of their learning curve so the material is developmentally appropriate, yet challenging. Student performance information is simultaneously compiled and presented in the Action Areas Tool, so teachers can easily see where to focus classroom instruction.

It is a challenge for many young students to remain attentive for an extended period of time, especially because not all students learn in the same way. That’s why Imagine Learning content engages learners across the modalities by employing a variety of auditory and visual teaching methods. Dynamic songs, chants, and direct instruction combine with beautiful illustrations, animations, and videos to keep students absorbed. Interactive speaking activities include music, recordings, and audio feedback to fully engage each learner. Tactile learners will do best using an iPad or tablet to utilize touchscreen features. In addition, teachers can print classroom resources such as flashcards and printouts.
