Early learners are more primed than anyone to learn new, basic vocabulary words, so it makes sense to introduce them to all the words they might encounter at home, at school, and in the community. The most effective vocabulary instruction exposes students to many different kinds of direct encounters with the same word. Imagine Learning presents target words in the context of stories, passages, and videos, providing each young student with a well-rounded educational experience. Young students develop key skills needed for literacy achievement through a variety of activities, such as learning related sets of words, creating scenes using vocabulary word pictures, and reviewing words in an organized word book. Early learners then practice recently learned verbs, adjectives, and adverbs by trying to identify them using the fewest number of clues.

Listening involves not just hearing, but also interpreting and constructing meaning—and it’s essential that young children learn how to do it. With Imagine Learning, young students learn the metacognitive strategy of selective attention to improve their listening comprehension. In activities like Put it Together, early learners are required to focus on specific words and phrases to practice selective listening. Your Turn to Talk gives students the opportunity to practice authentic speech by recording each phrase and then listening to the recording.

Sometimes it’s not just what you say—but how you say it. With Imagine Learning, early learners are directly taught contextualized conversational phrases through the use of engaging videos and activities. Students hear and practice authentic speech in a variety of examples. In activities like Daily Conversations, young students review learned phrases daily by seeing a video using the phrase in a new context. With Sing and Chant, students hear a song or chant and see accompanying text on the screen as the song plays. Activities use sight, sound, movement, and speech to engage young students. They’ll hear the phrases multiple times and then have the opportunity to record each phrase out loud. This not only improves their oral fluency and confidence, but also gives them plenty to talk about.
